Will Urrá drown the 60 families below the 132-m elevation?

Today, 40 Êbêra families from the communities of Imamado y Pawarandó - about 200 women, children, and men - have come to the border of the Êbêra Katío territory of the Upper Sinú River, near the Filogrande and Filito creeks, located in the areas to be flooded by the Urrá I reservoir. We have begin to build living quarters and to ready the land for planting.
We do this to occupy what is ours, to protect with our lives the Êbêra territory, our dignity as a people, and life itself. All these things are threatened by the arbitrary flooding which began on November 18 after Minister of the Environment Juan Mayr authorized the Urrá hydropower company to proceed.
The children were the first to arrive. They brought baskets and firewood. The men began building the houses. The women took care of the food. We came to stay for a long time in this land, which is ours and which the Colombian government and Urrá want to take by force and threatening to drown us.
But we will not leave our lands, because the government has not reached an agreement with us. Urrá has no right to use our lands, nor to flood them. This land is not for sale or for rent. To use it they need title where the owners, we the Êbêra, give authorization, and this we have not done.
The families that arrived join the 20 families from Dozá, Amborromia y Veguidó, 106 people who inhabit the areas to be drowned by the Urrá project. In the coming days we expect 50 more families to come and defend what is theirs.
We call on all of our friends in the world to accompany us in this endeavor to bring respect to what is ours. We invite them to come and live in this territory that we the Êbêra are defending for all of humanity.

¿Ahogará Urrá ahora a las 60 familias Êbêra que se encuentran por debajo de la cota 132 m?

El día de hoy, 40 familias Êbêra de las comunidades de Imamado y Pawarandó -- cerca de 200 personas entre mujeres, niños y hombres-- hemos bajado hasta el borde del Resguardo Êbêra Katío del Alto Sinú, en las Quebradas Filogrande y Filito, en zonas que se inundarán con el Embalse de Urrá I, y hemos empezado a construir tambos y preparar tierras para cultivo.
Se trata de ocupar lo que es nuestro, para proteger con la vida el territorio Êbêra, la dignidad como pueblo, y la vida misma, que están amenazados por la arbitraria inundación que autorizó el Ministro Juan Mayr a la Hidroeléctrica Urrá y que se inició el pasado 18 de noviembre.
Los niños fueron los primeros en llegar. Traían canastos y leña. Los hombres empezaron a levantar los tambos. Las mujeres organizaron la comida. Vinimos a quedarnos por largo tiempo en este territorio, que nos pertenece, y que el gobierno colombiano y Urrá se quieren tomar a la fuerza bajo la amenaza de ahogarnos.
Pero no vamos a salir de nuestra tierra, porque el gobierno no ha llegado a acuerdos con nosotros. Urrá no tiene autorización para utilizar nuestras tierras. Ni para inundarlas. Son territorios que no se venden ni se arriendan. Para usarlos necesitan una escritura pública donde los dueños-que somos todos los Êbêra-los autoricemos; y eso no lo hemos hecho.
Las familias que han llegado se suman a las 20 familias de Dozá, Amborromia y Veguidó, 106 personas, que habitan las zonas que Urrá ahogará con su proyecto. En los próximos días esperamos a otras 50 familias que vendrán a defender lo que les pertenece.
Llamamos a todos nuestros amigos en el mundo para que nos acompañen en esta tarea de hacer respetar lo propio. Que habiten con nosotros este territorio de los Êbêra que lo defendemos para toda la humanidad.
